In search of a functional flora—towards a greater integration of ecology and taxonomy

Abstract: Large-scale biodiversity informatics projects will not properly address the needs of one important potential user group. Ecologists do not have ready access to datasets which allow them to assign plant species to functional types. We believe that information technology has developed sufficiently to allow taxonomists and ecologists to work together to address this need and develop specimen databases to combine taxonomic data with ecological and ecophysiological information so that this information will be assig… Show more

“…Definitions vary in breadth and are especially challenging for variable taxa and those which hybridise. The appropriate inclusion of ecology, though long debated, remains unresolved (Andersson 1990;Grant 1992;Pendry et al 2007). For most taxonomists, species "can be characterized as hypotheses" which may be falsified (Knapp 2008).…”

“…However, plants have many attributes that may be used for identifying functional groups (Pendry et al, 2007) and the choice of such attributes must be clearly related to the role played by the species within the ecosystem. In this study, we focus on attributes that may represent the impacts caused by the presence of a dam.…”

“…species composition and structure) in the narrow time window of an average project lifetime, but will also be of use in the study of long-term dynamics (e.g. Nascimento et al 2007). There is still a need for increased understanding of forest processes and for new applications in terms of management.…”

“…A good example is the way in which plant physiology, with its high dependence on sophisticated instrumentation, has been integrated into the study of rain forest dynamics and diversity (e.g. Meir et al 2007 and references therein). Evolutionary and genetic studies provide another area that has seen a major growth recently (e.g.…”
