In-Situ Chemiresistor Sensor Package for Real-Time Detection of Volatile Organic Compounds in Soil and Groundwater

Abstract: This paper presents the development of a real-time microsensor-based monitoring system that can be used to detect and characterize volatile organic compounds in soil and groundwater. The system employs an array of polymer-based microsensors (chemiresistors) packaged in a waterproof housing that is designed to protect the sensor from harsh subsurface environments, including completely water-saturated conditions. The sensors and packaging have been tested in field and laboratory environments, and characterizatio… Show more

“…The design of the SAW sensor housing was modeled after the chemiresistor assembly developed by Ho and Hughes [2]. The primary difference between the chemiresistor housing and the SAW housing is that the outer collar for the SAW sensor is longer to accommodate additional electronics on a circuit board.…”

“…In addition, their system can only be used for gas-phase sampling. This work integrates an array of SAW sensors with a unique packaging design [2] to allow the SAW sensor to operative passively (no carrier gas) in a variety of media (air, soil, or water).…”

“…A robust package has been designed and fabricated to house the chemiresistor array (Ho and Hughes, 2002). This cylindrical package is small (~ 3 cm diameter) and is constructed of rugged, chemically-resistant material.…”

“…Chemiresistors have been shown to be effective in a broad range of applications ranging from volatile organic compound (VOC) detection in soil and groundwater [16] to detection of land mines [17]. Additionally, the relative ease of construction and availability of materials make chemiresistors inexpensive, allowing both reusable and disposable applications to be considered.…”
