In vitro Antioxidant Activity and Inhibition of Fe2+ and SNP Lipid Peroxidation of African Mistletoes (Tapinanthus globiferus) from Three Selected Host Plants in Jos Plateau State Nigeria

Abstract: Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the antioxidative properties of the mistletoe plant obtained from three different host species namely Psidium guajava, Vernonia amygdalina and Moringa olifera lam. Study Design: Experimental Design Place and Duration of Study: Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Department of Biochemistry, College of Health Sciences, University of Jos, Nigeria. Methodology: Crude methanolic leaf extracts were … Show more

“…The chelating activities of pomegranate leaves and peels, fig leaves, guava leaves and olive leaves crude juices were determined following the method described by Oche et al [ 13 ]. The absorbance at 510 nm was recorded using a UV–vis spectrophotometer (Shimadzu, UVmini-1240, Japan).…”

“…5,17,18 In other related works it was reported that AME and TGE could protect serum and brain lipids from peroxidation through the enhancement of antioxidant enzyme levels. [10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18] The most common lipid abnormalities in diabetes are hypertriglyceridemia and hypercholesterolemia. The increase in the levels of serum levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the diabetic rats is a result of insulin deficiency and altered activity of enzymes such as lipases and lecithin cholesterol acyl transferase (LCAT) for regulation of blood lipids.…”

“…10 These pharmacological benefits could be explained by the rich antioxidant contents evidenced by the ability to scavenge free radicals and inhibit lipid peroxidation. 11 Therefore, the present study was designed to compare the benefits of the two plants in combating the complications of diabetes on one hand, and on the other hand establish the benefits or otherwise of the combination of both plants.…”

“…Hemiparasitic plants (Mistletoe) have been investigated for the absorption of nutrients, water, and metabolites from their respective hosts [31,32], and it has been revealed that the metabolic profile of Mistletoe changes significantly with the type of host plant, which affects its antioxidant activity [33][34][35] and could be ascribed to differences in polyphenolic contents [36]. For determining the antioxidant potential of the plant extracts, there is no specific evaluation method due to the structural diversity of compounds, their modes of action, and multiple patterns of interactions [37].…”
