In Vitro Cytotoxicity Test and Surface Characterization of CoCrW Alloy in Artificial Saliva Solution for Dental Applications

Abstract: In order to evaluate its application as a dental prosthesis material, a CoCrW alloy was subjected to in vitro cytotoxicity test, surface characterization and electrochemical studies performed in artificial saliva and 0.15 mol.L -1 NaCl medium. The used techniques were: anodic polarization curves, chronoamperometric measurements, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Cytoto… Show more

“…20,25 In the literature clinical studies are reported that aim to evaluate the corrosion of orthodontic appliances in vitro. 15,[26][27][28] However, the lack of standardization in the experimental design allied to the presence of different electrochemical factors in the studies hinders data reproducibility. 18 Differences in the experiments design may also occur and the resulting corrosion products may adhere to the metal surface and become unavailable for instrumental analysis of the solutes and may not be observed.…”

“…[4][5][6] Among them, a super austenitic stainless steel (254 SS) with a high percentage of molybdenum and nitrogen is a prominent multifunctional material suitable for orthopaedic applications owing to non-cytotoxic behaviour and better corrosion performance in hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid and chloride media. [7][8][9][10] The high amount of nitrogen is added to combine free nickel and chromium contents. However, during long term uses, steel may leach toxic substances into the human body.…”
