In Vivo Endoscopic Tissue Identification by Rapid Evaporative Ionization Mass Spectrometry (REIMS)

Abstract: Gastrointestinal cancers are a leading cause of mortality, accounting for 23 % of cancer-related deaths worldwide. In order to improve outcomes from these cancers, novel tissue characterization methods are needed to facilitate accurate diagnosis. Rapid evaporative ionization mass spectrometry (REIMS) is a technique developed for the in vivo classification of human tissue through mass spectrometric analysis of aerosols released during electrosurgical dissection. This ionization technique was further developed b… Show more

“…Rapid evaporation of biological material with MS analysis has been performed in vivo for determining the boundary between cancerous and healthy tissue in real time according to the output provided by multivariate statistical analysis. 77, 78, 103 Lipidomic spectral features were capable of differentiating between healthy layers of the intestinal wall, cancer, and adenomatous polyps based on the REIMS fingerprints of each tissue type that were clustered in a 3-D PCA space (Figure 2 and 3). 78 REIMS has also been implemented as an attractive platform for fast shotgun lipidomic profiling of human cancerous cell lines with minimal sample preparation.…”

“…In addition, the influence of one freeze-thaw cycle on spectral variance was investigated and was found to be insignificant. Detailed sampling schedules can be found in Table S Earlier studies demonstrated that REIMS is suitable to generate phospholipid profiles of various biological materials such as animal tissues, 2,27,28 human ex-vivo tissue samples of healthy and cancerous origin, 1,29 as well as microorganisms. 3,30 As analysis is performed in negative ion mode, the spectral content is similar to that described in those earlier studies featuring predominantly glycerophospholipidtype membrane lipids such as phosphatidylethanolamines -ions.…”
