Incidence and risk factors of atrial fibrillation in a surgical intensive care unit*

Abstract: During invasive mechanical ventilation due to the dryness of medical gases is necessary to provide an adequate level of conditioning. The hot water humidifiers (HWH) heat the water, thus allowing the water vapor to heat and humidify the medical gases. In the common HWH there is a contact between the medical gases and the sterile water, thus increasing the risk of patient's colonization and infection. Recently to avoid the condensation in the inspiratory limb of the ventilator circuit, new heated ventilator cir… Show more

“…Although A fib is the most frequently reported arrhythmia (14,15,17,19), large epidemiologic studies designed to assess incidence of different arrhythmias in the septic population are lacking. Consistent with our findings, previous studies have found advanced age, male gender and comorbidities such as heart failure, HTN and valvular heart disease to predict new onset A Fib in critically ill patients (5,14,16,20,21). Similarly new onset A fib has consistently been associated with a higher mortality in septic patients (2,4,14).…”

“…The vast majority of studies assessing risk and outcomes of arrhythmias in sepsis have focused on supra ventricular arrhythmias, A Fib in particular (14)(15)(16)(17). To our knowledge, the present study is the largest to use discharge diagnoses from the NIS database to validate prevalence, trends, predictors and outcomes of different arrhythmias in the septic population.…”

“…8 Outcomes were significantly worse in the critically ill patients who had atrial fibrillation than in those without atrial fibrillation. However, as suggested by multiple logistic regression analysis, atrial fibrillation was not independently associated with mortality; most likely the arrhythmia is a marker of critical illness.…”

“…4 Estimates of the incidence of atrial fibrillation in critically ill patients range from 47.4% to 61% of all arrhythmias and 52% of atrial arrhythmias. [5][6][7] In a study 8 of surgical ICU patients, the incidence was 5.3%. In critically ill patients, atrial fibrillation can be initiated by fluid shifts, electrolyte imbalances, neurohormonal disturbances, arrhythmogenic drugs, and systemic inflammatory responses.…”

“…(Int Heart J 2009; 50: 353-363) Key words: Atrial fibrillation, Septic shock, L-type calcium channel, Lipopolysaccharide, Electrical remodeling IT has been reported that septic shock is one of the independent risk factors for atrial fibrillation (AF) in the surgical intensive care unit. [1][2][3] In a multivariate analysis of the risk factors for AF, the odds ratio of shock was high at greater than 6, and most cases of shock were septic shock. …”
