Incisional hernia and its impact on health-related quality of life after cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy: a national prospective cohort study

Abstract: BackgroundTo evaluate the incidence of incisional hernia (IH) after cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS + HIPEC) and its impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL).MethodFrom June 2006 until June 2016, 152 patients were followed after CRS + HIPEC at Aarhus University Hospital, a single national center. Patients were seen postoperatively in an outpatient clinic at 3, 6, 12, 18, 24, 36 48, and 60 months. Clinical examinations at these follow-up visits were used to evalu… Show more

“…The baseline characteristics of this study reflect previous reports in the age, gender and BMI of the participants, 5–7 however, differ in the primary malignancy type and preoperative peritoneal carcinomatosis index (PCI) 5,7 . Most of the patients in this study (63.2%) were operated due to colorectal carcinoma with relatively high average PCI score (11.4).…”

“…Nevertheless, previous reports on CRS-HIPEC showed no additional risk for IH after this procedure, with IH rates of less than 10% in most of them. [5][6][7][8] Based on our clinical experience, the rates of IH after CRS-HIPEC were much higher than previously reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate the rate of IH after CRS-HIPEC and its risk factors.…”

“…A very recent national prospective cohort study from Denmark focused on the impact of incisional hernia on health-related quality of life after cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (147). CRS + HIPEC do not increase the risk of incisional hernia as measured within 12 months postoperatively, but when developed, incisional hernia adversely affected health-related quality of life.…”
