Including Mixtures in the Determination of Water Quality Criteria for Herbicides in Surface Water

Abstract: Monitoring programs throughout America and Europe have demonstrated the common occurrence of herbicides in surface water. Nevertheless, mixtures are rarely taken into account in water quality regulation. Taking mixtures into account is only feasible if the water quality criteria (WQC) of the single compounds are derived by a common and consistent methodology, which overcomes differences in data quality without settling on the lowest common denominator but making best use of all available data. In this paper, w… Show more

“…Comparison of the measured photosynthesis inhibition with the concentration of photosynthesis inhibitors was based on the concept of concentration addition for substances with similar mode of action according to Chèvre et al (2006). The concentrations of the four most abundant photosynthesis inhibitors included in the analytical list, the herbicides atrazine, diuron and isoproturon, and the algicide terbutryn were converted to diuronequivalents based on their relative potency (HC50-EC50: hazardous concentration affecting 50% of the species with 50% effect, Chèvre et al, 2006) and then summed up.…”

One µg l -1 of atrazine, diuron, isoproturon and terbutryn corresponds to 0.084, 1, 0.559 and 0.881 µg l -1 DEQs respectively.…”

“…Im Rahmen der Arbeit sollte die (1) Ökotoxizität von acht Bioziden ermittelt, (2) Chèvre et al (2006) angewendet wurde. Bei der Berechnung von SSDs ist entscheidend, dass alle verwendeten taxonomischen Gruppen prinzipiell gleich empfindlich gegenüber dem untersuchten Stoff sind.…”

“…Furthermore, peak concentrations are typically detected following rain events after the isoproturon field application, when this compound is transported from the fields to surface waters by surface runoff, drainage, or spray drift (Kreuger 1998). For example, concentrations in Swiss rivers up to 8.4 lg/l greatly exceeded the suggested Swiss chronic water quality criterion (CQC), set at 0.27 lg/l for this herbicide (Chèvre et al 2006;Balsiger et al 2007).…”
