Including Modifiable and Nonmodifiable Factors Improves Injury Risk Assessment in Professional Baseball Pitchers

Abstract: Objectives To (1) evaluate an injury risk model that included modifiable and nonmodifiable factors into an arm injury risk prediction model in Minor League Baseball (MiLB) pitchers and (2) compare model performance separately for predicting the incidence of elbow and shoulder injuries. Design Prospective cohort. Methods A 10-year MiLB injury risk study was conducted. Pitchers were evaluated during preseason, and pitches and arm injuries were documented prospectively. Nonmodifiable variables included arm injury… Show more

“… 24 The period of the first 3 months after measurement is clearly defined because shoulder ROM may change throughout the season, 61 causing a degradation in the relation between initial preseason shoulder ROM measurements and middle- or late-season arm injuries. 62 We would like to highlight that this proposed causal DAG is not the final model: We invite others to comment on and improve this DAG. Cumulatively, this effort will advance our understanding of the potential causal systems between shoulder ROM and baseball elbow injuries.…”

“…While injury risk profiling is performed throughout baseball, 51 , 60 , 61 without proper education and interventions, identifying high injury risk athletes is inconsequential. 53 Specific interventions have been employed for shoulder ROM deficits, including stretching and manual therapy. 2 However, despite the integration of injury risk profiling, education, and individualized interventions for high injury risk athletes, it is currently unclear how these strategies affect injuries in professional baseball pitchers.…”
