Incomplete capsule endoscopy examinations after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass

Abstract: Patients with a history of Roux-en-Y surgery appear to be at increased risk for incomplete examination due to capsule retention and delayed gastric transit. Endoscopists may consider additional precursory testing or the use of alternative imaging methods in this population.

“…The relatively small size of our cohort might increase the risk of type 2 error. Nevertheless, this limitation should be taken into account in the context of the paucity of current published data, with only few small-scaled studies in the bariatric population [7, 8]. Furthermore, as our center is the largest one in the largest HMO in Israel, one can assume that the data represent the situation in Israel.…”

“…Video capsule endoscopy (VCE) is a minimally invasive method of small-bowel visualization in patients with a wide range of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders and can be utilized in patients who underwent bariatric surgeries [5, 6]. To date, there are minimal data available regarding the performance of VCE after bariatric surgery, the accepted insertion methods, and reported retention rates [7, 8]. In addition, data on the yield of VCE in the diagnosis of CD after bariatric surgery are scant.…”
