Incorporating food-web parameter uncertainty into Ecopath-derived ecological network indicators

Abstract: International audienceEcological network analysis (ENA) provides numerous ecosystem level indices offering a valuable approach to compare and categorize the ecological structure and function of ecosystems. The inclusion of ENA methods in Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) has insured their continued contribution to ecosystem-based management. In EwE, ENA-derived ecological conclusions are currently based on single values of ENA indices calculated from a unique input flow matrix. Here, we document an easy-to-use routine… Show more

“…All ecosystem index values derived from the original base Ecopath model fell within subsequent index distributions following the incorporation of uncertainty. The results obtained by Guesnet and others (2015) suggest that ecosystem indices produced by Ecopath are not significantly affected by uncertainty in original ecosystem model input parameters below differences of 40% from true values.…”

“…Nevertheless, this study does not directly use outputs for individual species and functional groups, but ecosystem-wide indicators. The influence of parameter uncertainty on synthetic ecosystem indices was tested in Guesnet and others (2015) for the Bay of Biscay, an Ecopath model used in this study. Through the introduction of uncertainty to Ecopath input parameters, this study assessed how estimates of ecosystem indices derived from the original Ecopath model inputs compared to output index distributions derived from varying levels of uncertainty.…”

“…Methods have been developed to evaluate the sensitivity of model results to uncertainty in parameters (Guesnet et al 2015;Lobry et al, this symposium) and model structure (Prato et al 2014, this symposium). In describing trophic cascades, these models have proven useful to inform management on the direct and indirect effects of fisheries and management throughout the food web.…”

“…New modeling approaches using mass-balanced models were also developed to identify ecosystem structure, function (including Ecological Network Analyses) and reaction to disturbance (Lassalle et al, 2013(Lassalle et al, , 2014aNiquil et al, 2014;Chaalali et al, 2015;Guesnet et al, 2015).…”
