Nanoscale-featured Li-based NASICON-type solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) are an emerging material that overcomes the demerits such as conductivity and stability of other organic-and inorganic-based electrolytes. However, syntheses of these types of SSEs require higher temperatures, which is a challenging task to reduce energy consumption to date. Hence, this work aims to prepare a nanosized Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) SSE at relatively low sintering temperature. LATP is prepared by a modified sol−gel method using a mineralizer (conc. HNO 3 ) and citric acid. The size of the synthesized LATP was reduced to the nanolevel using the ball milling process to achieve high relative density at low sintering temperature. The assynthesized LATP nanoparticles (NPs) were characterized by using phase compositions and morphological analyses. The LATP NPs were sintered at different sintering temperatures and for different soaking times. The maximum relative density (93.36%) and high ionic conductivity (6.39 × 10 −4 S/cm) were achieved for the sample sintered at 825 °C for 6 h (S-LATP-825-6), which is found to be a lower sintering temperature than in the previous reports. The storage stability results showed that S-LATP-825-6 exhibits good ionic conductivity retention even after 30 days of storage under natural environmental conditions.

With the increasing use of Li batteries for storage, their safety issues and energy densities are attracting considerable attention. Recently, replacing liquid organic electrolytes with solid‐state electrolytes (SSE) has been hailed as the key to developing safe and high‐energy‐density Li batteries. In particular, Li1+xAlxTi2−x(PO4)3 (LATP) has been identified as a very attractive SSE for Li batteries due to its excellent electrochemical stability, low production costs, and good chemical compatibility. However, interfacial reactions with electrodes and poor thermal stability at high temperatures severely restrict the practical use of LATP in solid‐state batteries (SSB). Herein, a systematic review of recent advances in LATP for SSBs is provided. This review starts with a brief introduction to the development history of LATP and then summarizes its structure, ion transport mechanism, and synthesis methods. Challenges (e.g., intrinsic brittleness, interfacial resistance, and compatibility) and corresponding solutions (ionic substitution, additives, protective layers, composite electrolytes, etc.) that are critical for practical applications are then discussed. Last, an outlook on the future research direction of LATP‐based SSB is provided.

An Li1.3Al0.3SnxTi1.7−x(PO4)3 (LATP-xSn) ceramic solid electrolyte was prepared by Sn doping via a solid phase method. The results showed that adding an Sn dopant with a larger ionic radius in a concentration of x = 0.35 enabled one to equivalently substitute Ti sites in the LATP crystal structure to the maximum extent. The uniform Sn doping could produce a stable LATP structure with small grain size and improved relative density. The lattice distortion induced by Sn doping also modified the transport channels of Li ions, which promoted the increase of ionic conductivity from 5.05 × 10−5 to 4.71 × 10−4 S/cm at room temperature. The SPE/LATP-0.35Sn/SPE composite solid electrolyte with a sandwich structure was prepared by coating, which had a high ionic conductivity of 5.9 × 10−5 S/cm at room temperature, a wide electrochemical window of 4.66 V vs. Li/Li+, and a good lithium-ion migration number of 0.38. The Li||Li symmetric battery test results revealed that the composite solid electrolyte could stably perform for 500 h at 60 °C under the current density of 0.2 mA/cm2, indicating its good interface stability with metallic lithium. Moreover, the analysis of the all-solid-state LiFePO4||SPE/LATP-0.35Sn/SPE||Li battery showed that the composite solid electrolyte had good cycling stability and rate performance. Under the conditions of 60 °C and 0.2 C, stable accumulation up to 200 cycles was achieved at a capacity retention ratio of 90.5% and a coulombic efficiency of about 100% after cycling test.
