Increased Osteogenesis Elicited by Boron-Modified Bioactive Glass Particles in the SiO2-CaO-P2O5-Na2O System: A Histomorphometric Study in Rats

Abstract: The effect of boron-containing bioactive glass (BG) particles in the SiO2-CaO-P2O5-Na2O system on the bone formation was studied by histologic, histomorphometric and microchemical evaluation. Wistar rats were used throughout. Under anesthesia, 45S5 BG particles were placed inside the medullary compartment of the tibia (Control), while in the contralateral tibia (Experimental) 45S5.2B BG particles were implanted. The animals were sacrificed 15 days postimplantation. The tibiae were resected, radiographed, and e… Show more

“…ALP activity results suggested that 7B‐BG containing bilayered group could stimulate the early osteogenic differentiation marker of hDPSCs better in comparison with the other groups. It has been reported that ionic dissolution products released from the membranes containing B‐modified BG could mediate the differentiation of hDPSCs (El‐Gendy, Yang, Newby, Boccaccini, & Kirkham, ; Gorustovich, Guglielmotti, Porto López, & Cabrini, ).…”

“…Different ions were incorporated into BG compositions, and their effects have been investigated (Nandi, Mahato, Kundu, & Mukherjee, ). Boron (B)‐incorporated BGs are used in regenerative medicine due to their positive effect on release of growth factors and increased turnover of the extracellular matrix (Gorustovich, Guglielmotti, Porto Lopez, & Cabrini, ). Inclusion of B into BGs enhances their biodegradation and bioactivity properties (Fernandes et al, ; Nandi et al, ; Yang et al, ).…”

“…Overheating and additional bone damage were prevented by using manual rotating impulsion. 7 Boron-modified melt-derived 45S5 bioactive glass (BG) particles (300-350 mm) 8,9 were placed inside the medullary compartment of the tibiae. The wounds were carefully sutured with an absorbable polyglactin 910 suture (Vicryl, Ethicon).…”
