Abstract:Background
Alcohol is a recognized risk factor for sexually transmitted diseases (STD) acquisition, but the mechanism is unclear. Potentially, adolescents using alcohol in the two hours before sex (in-the-moment use) have riskier sexual partners.

This study adds to the limited literature on the association between retail alcohol availability and STIs. Additional research is needed on the role of alcohol availability (and policies affecting availability) in the spread of HIV and other STIs.
