Increased serum CRH levels with decreased skin CRHR-1 gene expression in psoriasis and atopic dermatitis

Abstract: There is increased serum CRH with decreased lesional skin CRHR-1 gene expression in psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, suggesting possible involvement in stress-induced worsening of symptoms.

“…Moreover, there is evidence of cross-talk between microglia and MCs (Skaper et al, 2014). It is interesting that the diseases discussed above worsen with stress (Theoharides and Cochrane, 2004;Vasiadi et al, 2012;Theoharides et al, 2012b;Karagkouni et al, 2013), and MCs are activated by corticotropin-releasing hormone secreted under stress Cao et al, 2005).…”

“…107,108 Corticotropin-releasing hormone, which downregulates IL-10 production by adaptive forkhead box protein 3-negative regulatory T cells, 109 has been recently found to have altered expression in patients with AD. 110 Although AD is known as a T H 2-and T H 22-mediated inflammatory skin disease, and psoriasis is known as a T H 1/T H 17-mediated skin disease, 111 there might be AD subsets that do not follow this rule. Indeed, IL-17 expression has been reported in mouse models of eczema.…”

“…11;12 MC-derived CCL2 13 and CXCL-8 ( IL-8) enhance recruitment of immune cells to the site of inflammation. 6;7;14 The ability to release multiple mediators allows MC to actively interact with other cell types in their surrounding environment, and participate in the induction and/or propagation of various immune and inflammatory responses including mastocytosis, 15 asthma 16 , atopic dermatitis, 17 and psoriasis. 3;16;18;19 Therefore, inhibition of MC activation has clear therapeutic potential.…”
