“…This can be explained by the reduced operating capacity, personnel shortages, and the lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic and can also be traced back to a delay in surgery in other medical specialist areas. 9,34 Focusing on the causes and circumstances that led to mandible fractures, the present study showed a significant increase in the number of falls and a significant decrease in sports accidents. These changes were also identified in further studies by Lee et al, 27 Philip et al 31 and Nhongo et al 32 Furthermore, the present study showed a decrease in road traffic accidents with a particularly significant decrease in e-scooter accidents in the IC cohort.…”

“…Conversely, a study conducted in Uganda regarding emergency surgical services revealed that patients were facing more delays in surgical care during the pandemic due to insufficient operating space and a shortage of surgeons. Moreover, they observed that the rise in COVID-19 cases was positively correlated with an increased proportion of care delays [24]. Multiple factors have contributed to decreased time between diagnosis and surgical intervention, including implementing new protocols and guidelines to limit virus exposure.…”
