The bioenergetics of cellulose utilization by Clostridium thermocellum was investigated. Determination of intracellular β-glucan radioactivity resulting from 14C-labeled substrates showed that uptake is different for cellulose and cellobiose (G2). For 14C-cellobiose, radioactivity was greatest for G2; substantially smaller but measurable for G1, G3, and G4; undetectable for G5 and G6; and n was ≈2. For 14C-cellulose, radioactivity was greatest for G5; lower but substantial for G6, G2, and G1; very low for G3 and G4; and n was ≈4. These results indicate that: (i) C. thermocellum hydrolyzes cellulose by a different mode of action from the classical mechanism involving solubilization by cellobiohydrolase; (ii) bioenergetic benefits specific to growth on cellulose are realized, resulting from the efficiency of oligosaccharide uptake combined with intracellular phosphorolytic cleavage of β-glucosidic bonds; and (iii) these benefits exceed the bioenergetic cost of cellulase synthesis, supporting the feasibility of anaerobic biotechnological processing of cellulosic biomass without added saccharolytic enzymes

The very early stages of KCl-induced corrosion of a FeCrAl and a FeNiCrAl alloy in an O 2 /H 2 O environment were studied using in-situ Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM). The samples were KCl contaminated and then exposed to lab air at a total pressure of 4.8 Torr at 450 • C. After exposure, the samples were analyzed using SEM-EDX, FIB and STEM-EDX. For both alloys, fast oxide growth occurred at the KCl particles. Far away from the KCl particles, a thin base oxide formed with potassium chromate nodules on top. The base oxide was layered, consisting of iron-chromium oxide on top and alumina in the bottom part. The FeCrAl alloy suffered internal oxidation while the FeNiCrAl did not. Both alloys formed sub-scale chlorides. A mechanism is proposed for the reaction of KCl on the surface and for the formation of different surface features at the KCl particles.

Industrial and commercial areas are synonymous with high energy consumption, both for heating/cooling and electric power requirements, which are in general associated to a massive use of fossil fuels producing consequent greenhouse gas emissions. Two pilot systems, co-funded by the Italian Ministry for the Environment, have been created to upgrade the heating/cooling systems of two existing buildings on the largest industrial estate in Umbria, Italy. The upgrade was specifically designed to improve the system efficiency and to cover the overall energy which needs with renewable energy resources. In both cases a solar photovoltaic plant provides the required electric power. The first system features a geothermal heat pump with an innovative layout: a heat-storage water tank, buried just below ground level, allows a significant reduction of the geothermal unit size, hence requiring fewer and/or shorter boreholes (up to 60%-70%). In the other system a biomass boiler is coupled with an absorption chiller machine, controlling the indoor air temperature in both summer and winter. In this case, lower electricity consumption, if compared to an electric compression chiller, is obtained. The first results of the monitoring of summer cooling are presented and an evaluation of the performance of the two pilot systems is given.
