Increasing heterogeneity in the organization of synaptic inputs of mature olfactory bulb neurons generated in newborn rats

Abstract: New neurons are added into the mammalian olfactory bulb throughout life, but it remains unknown whether the properties of new neurons generated in newborn animals differ from those added during adulthood. We compared the densities of glutamatergic synapses of granule cells (GCs) generated in newborn and adult rats over extended periods of time. We observed that, whereas adult-born GCs maintained stable cell-to-cell variability of synaptic densities soon after they integrated into the circuit, cell-to-cell vari… Show more

“…This antiserum stains a single band at ∼50–55 kDa as observed by western blot analysis of fibroblast‐like BHK 21 C13 cells (Archer et al, ). Moreover, omission of rabbit anti‐c‐Fos antibody resulted in no labeled cells (data not shown; Ingham et al, ; Kelsch et al, ).…”

“…In the embryo, the key tissue elements, such as blood–brain barrier (Hagan and Ben-Zvi 2015), astrocyte (Jacobsen and Miller 2003; Rowitch and Kriegstein 2010) and oligodendrocyte cells (Kessaris et al 2006), or stable neuronal circuitry (Kelsch et al 2012; Luhmann et al 2014), are either not present or undergoing development. Absence of these elements is bound to influence the way humoral factors, such as growth factors or neurotransmitters, can affect cellular processes.…”
