This study challenges the basic reasoning behind Lazear's theory on entrepreneurship (2005). Based on the key motive of maximizing one's lifetime income, Lazear posits that individuals with a balanced set of skills should have a higher probability of being self-employed. His ''Jack-of-all-trades'' hypothesis presumes that entrepreneurs need sufficient knowledge in a variety of areas to succeed, while paid employees benefit from being specialists in a certain area demanded by the labor market. Because most women-led businesses are neither based on the motive of making money nor are they growth oriented, we argue that maximizing their lifetime income is not the main motivation of many women to start a business. However, we argue that Lazear's theory can be extended to motivations that are mostly stated for women entrepreneurs as well. We apply it to a specific representative sample of 1384 women graduates in Germany and test our hypothesis with logit regression. A dichotomized measure indicating whether a women graduate was self-employed (n = 706) or not (n = 678) served as the dependent variable. Our results widely confirm Lazear's assumption for women graduates who run relatively small businesses in terms of sales and employment: professional training, balanced industry experience, and balanced entrepreneurship-based self-efficacy increase the probability of being self-employed. Solo self-employed tend to have balanced industry experience more often than those being in a team or having employees. Lazear's theory has male as the norm, and as such, does not readily apply to the case of women-but could and should be extended to women's specifics.

Psychological processes (e.g., cognition, motivation, emotions) have emerged as key to understanding entrepreneurial actions and success. Currently, we do not know enough about specific entrepreneurial psychological processes and particularly lack knowledge about their cumulative or interactive effects. Self-regulation offers some promise in understanding these issues. However, self-regulation in entrepreneurship has not been fully explored, which limits our understanding. We address this by introducing an integrated model of episodic self-regulation (the A-CEM-A model) to map the reciprocal regulatory effects of action, cognition, emotion, and motivation in entrepreneurship research and isolate a series of propositions stemming from the model. We further explore the resource implications of the A-CEM-A model for entrepreneurs managing several self-regulatory processes simultaneously. The A-CEM-A model offers a novel and unique insight into entrepreneurial action and psychological processes, and presents a roadmap for future researchers interested in adopting an episodic process perspective in entrepreneurship research.

Abstract:To support early stage women entrepreneurs there is a need to increase their performance and growth potential through entrepreneurial education and training. The objective of the study is to develop a theoretically and empirically based entrepreneurship education and training for early stage women entrepreneurs. The focus of this study is placed exemplarily on early stage women entrepreneurs in Germany and Ireland. The components, program goals, program elements, as well as the participants' characteristics, the program's contextual environment, and the availability of funding for operations provide a framework for designing a theoretically and empirically based program to help early stage women entrepreneurs increase their entrepreneurial success. This Entrepreneurship Education and Training is built on the core dimensions of entrepreneurship education action-orientation, autonomy and the interplay between risk and responsibility. Action-orientation is reflected in acting in learning to solve business problems in one's own company. Autonomy is manifested by selecting individual learning objectives. Interplay between risk and responsibility is shown through taking responsibility for individual and organizational development, which participants will learn is in part a risk-taking process. Because we expand on these core dimensions, entrepreneurial learning can be understood as learning through entrepreneurial action, reflection and narration. The design of the program targeted at early stage women entrepreneurs not only shows how the core components of an entrepreneurial education and training program can be designed for the specific target group of early stage women entrepreneurs in Germany and Ireland, but also how the Entrepreneurship Education and Training Effectiveness Framework can be enriched. We include the process of deriving program and learner goals as a critical starting point for designing programs affecting both learning performance and outcome.
