Indirect effect of a turmeric diet: enhanced bile duct proliferation in Syrian hamsters with a combination of partial obstruction by Opisthorchis viverrini infection and inflammation by N-nitrosodimethylamine administration

Abstract: The present study revealed the indirect effect of a turmeric (TUR) diet on the histopathological changes and proliferating cell nuclear antigen staining in Syrian hamsters with partial obstruction by liver fluke (Opisthorchis viverrini) infection and inflammation by N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) administration. The result of the analysis of histopathological changes shows that a TUR diet has an anti-inflammatory property in the case of a single condition of NDMA administration or O. viverrini infection, as has… Show more

“…Moreover, we made the novel discovery that Syrian hamsters and gerbils appear to have different components in their bile fluid. The habitat of O. viverrini in the definitive host or natural host is located in the biliary system, gallbladder, common bile duct, and hepatic bile duct (Adam et al 1993;Sripa and Kaewkes 2002;Boonmars et al 2009a, b;Boonjaraspinyo et al 2011). By histopathological observation, the present study found additional areas of O. viverrini infestation: the ampulla of Vater and the pancreatic duct (Fig.…”

“…The tissue was then embedded in paraffin wax. Sections of 5 μm thickness were cut using a microtome and then stained with hematoxylin-eosin and observed under a light microscope, as in previous studies Boonjaraspinyo et al 2011). Photographs of each slide were taken at 10× and 40× magnification.…”
