It is often neglected that the experience of artwork is a creative act, and one which requires the audience to be creative. This exploratory study aimed to examine whether creative activity and measures of pe rson`s creativity are correlated with the aesthetic experience of paintings. Eighty-two participants rated 21 paintings, including 7 figural traditional paintings, 7 semi-abstract works, and 7 abstract works. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two experimental groups. One group first created collages and then rated the paintings on five aesthetic preference scales, while the other group first rated the paintings and then created collages. Multilevel regression analysis with two crossed random effects (participants and paintings) was used. Results showed that performing a creative activity prior to rating artwork positively influenced ratings of artwork creativity. In addition, collage creativity was positively correlated with ratings of (semi)abstract paintings as beautiful. It is hypothesized that people become more open to new, unusual experiences, are more flexible and act more freely in their decisions when performing a creative activity, which reflects positively on stronger preferences of paintings.

Resumen La presencia de proyectos socioculturales comunitarios que tienen en el arte su motor impulsor ha diversificado disímiles contextos urbanos y rurales. El objetivo de esta investigación es la creación y validación de una escala que permita analizar y comprender las formas de acción y manifestación de las mediaciones culturales en las comunidades. El instrumento, compuesto por cinco dimensiones - estética, artística, participativa, axiológica y anclaje territorial - responde a un concepto de mediaciones culturales manifiestas en la construcción, reproducción e intercambio simbólico producido entre los factores culturales, los dispositivos artísticos, el territorio y el público participante de un proyecto sociocultural comunitario. Se utilizó un enfoque mixto en la investigación, donde se triangularon los resultados de varios focus groups, rondas de expertos y pruebas estadísticas que demuestran la validez y confiabilidad del instrumento. Los ítems propuestos para cada dimensión resultaron del análisis literario, de diferentes focus groups con especialistas en la temática y de la validación de expertos a través del método Delphi. El cuestionario se aplicó a 268 participantes de diversos proyectos socioculturales. El índice de consistencia interna mostró un coeficiente de 0,845, mientras que en el análisis factorial exploratorio se confirmaron las dimensiones creadas a través de las comunalidades surgidas. En el análisis factorial confirmatorio se evidenció la correlación entre todas estas dimensiones. En las subescalas, los Alpha de Cronbach fueron satisfactorios, así como la correlación entre ítems.

Aesthetic sensitivity has been defined as the ability to recognize and appreciate beauty and compositional excellence, and to judge artistic merit according to standards of aesthetic value. The Visual Aesthetic Sensitivity Test (VAST) has often been used to assess this ability, but recent research has revealed it has several psychometric problems. Such problems are not easily remedied, because they reflect flawed assumptions inherent to the concept of aesthetic sensitivity as traditionally understood, and to the VAST itself. We introduce a new conception of aesthetic sensitivity defined as the extent to which someone’s aesthetic valuation is influenced by a given feature. Experiment 1 aimed to characterize aesthetic sensitivity to four prominent features in visual aesthetics: complexity, symmetry, contour, and balance. Experiment 2 aimed to replicate the findings of Experiment 1, and to assess the test–retest reliability of an instrument designed to measure aesthetic sensitivity to these features using an abridged set of stimuli. Our results reveal that people differ remarkably in the extent to which visual features influence their liking, highlighting the crucial role of individual variation when modeling aesthetic preferences. We did not find clear relations between the four measures of aesthetic sensitivity and personality, intelligence, and art interest and knowledge. Finally, our measurement instrument exhibited an adequate to good test–retest reliability.
