Indoor vertical greenery system in urban tropics

Abstract: The integration of vegetated architecture has evolved from gardening, aesthetic design, or artistic expression, to an indoor element named iVGS providing fashion function for the indoor environment. The aim of this study is to identify characteristics of commonly used indoor plants in tropics, and to determine the advantages and disadvantages of iVGS, criteria in selecting installation methods, layout plans for iVGS and correlation among locations, parameters, types and Pros & Cons. A questionnaire survey and … Show more

“…Nevertheless, it has been established that the additive effects of a peaceful natural environment and physical activity contribute to better mental health [35]. Experiments show that indoor plants can improve concentration and productivity, and lead to direct benefits for mental functioning [36,37]. In particular, the benefits of indoor plants are often overlooked in green building actions.…”

“…Based on the growing medium, indoor plants are generally grouped into soil-based, non-soil based (such as hydroponic [96], aeroponic, or aquaponic [97]). In additional to conventional indoor potted plants, innovative indoor vertical greenery has also been investigated [37,98]. However, there is still a need to explore how indoor planting can be integrated into building services design.…”

“…Though insects were suggested by other scholars as challenges for iVGS in the tropics, since Moss-iVGS environments are normally air-conditioned, insects have not come into a major problem so far. 40,41 Water is needed by moss for photosynthesis but not for the survival. Even if without irrigation for more than 45 days, Moss-iVGS could recover and regain their greenery within 24 h once water was applied again.…”

“…relaxation (Raji et al 2015), and indoor greening technology such as indoor vertical green walls have proved to be an effective way to improve indoor air quality (Wang et al 2016). Comparing outdoor plants with blinds in buildings, plants create more effective shading performance than blinds, which should be considered as a way of construction with building envelope (Stec et al 2005).…”
