Industrial autonomous systems: a survey on definitions, characteristics and abilities

Abstract: Autonomous systems are increasingly discussed in the domain of industrial automation. However, there is no consensus in the literature about the definition of industrial autonomous systems, what characteristics do they possess and how to distinguish them from intelligent industrial automation systems. Another important aspect is the comparison between the degree of automation and autonomy. Addressing this confusion, this paper starts with an analysis of the historical development of the term autonomy. Based on… Show more

“…Another concept that may lead to different associations and understandings (as well as misunderstandings) in different contexts is that of autonomy. It is a word that can be defined in different ways in different contexts, and like for automation, there are several definitions, shown, for example, by Müller et al [52], who made a review on different notions of autonomy in industrial systems. It is also a word used in everyday language, which means that there may be many different understandings of it.…”

“…The use of artificial narrow intelligence techniques (in particular deep learning and machine learning) and full-fledged digital twins in various runtime activities of system self-adaptation and dependable automation is increasing (Müller et al, 2021). This ongoing intellectualization concerns both tasks related to solving application problems and tasks related to self-adaptation and self-supervision (Casadei et al, 2020).…”

“…Examples of these include Full Self-Driving (FSD) AI technology in electric vehicles [7], surgical robots [8], and crop monitoring with drones [9]. The reduction in human intervention associated with some of these applications has resulted in the new class of systems termed "autonomous agents" [10]. The energy sector is not left out of this revolution and has a conservative cumulative annual growth rate (CAGR) of 23.6% and revenue of USD 49.54 billion forecasted for artificial intelligence applications between 2023-2032 [11].…”
