Infectious Diseases Associated with Hydrometeorological Hazards in Europe: Disaster Risk Reduction in the Context of the Climate Crisis and the Ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract: Hydrometeorological hazards comprise a wide range of events, mainly floods, storms, droughts, and temperature extremes. Floods account for the majority of the related disasters in both developed and developing countries. Flooding alters the natural balance of the environment and frequently establish a favorable habitat for pathogens and vectors to thrive. Diseases caused by pathogens that require vehicle transmission from host to host (waterborne) or a host/vector as part of their life cycle (vector-borne) are… Show more

“…Public health officials should prioritize surveillance to reduce the risk of rodent-borne infections in all the earthquake-affected regions of southeastern Turkey. The immediate detection and identification of local rodent species, environmental variables and breeding habitats that affect local disease transmission is essential for the implementation of control measures and the advancement of preparedness initiatives aimed at emerging rodent-borne diseases [ 36 ]. The earthquake-affected population should also avoid places such as uncontrolled waste disposal sites and stagnant water areas where they may come into contact with infectious material, such as contaminated surface water or soil and contaminated animal urine, and be exposed to various pathogenic microorganisms [ 37 ].…”

“…From the literature, this research can be carried out in determining which parameters are influential. In this research, the tools and materials used are presented in Table 1 and Table 2 density greatly affects the evacuation process and disease transmission during an outbreak, as well as being a measure of potential exposure to life during a flood disaster [25]. Area size is a measure of population movement; vulnerability will increase if a large number of people live in a narrow area because it affects accessibility during evacuation [26,27].…”

“…The international trade recovery must transcend the risk model to plan and prioritize trade recovery measures based on the interdependence between public health and trade [ 15 , 16 ]. The affected areas must take pre- and post-prevention and mitigation measures after the disaster outbreak [ 17 ]. (3) Implementing regional measures.…”
