Infiltration in the Corgo River basin (northern Portugal): coupling water balances with rainfall—runoff regressions on a monthly basis

Abstract: A combination of water balances and rainfall-runoff regressions is used to calculate infiltration (I), overland flow (Q s), base flow (Q g) and change to the surface water reservoir ( s), on a monthly basis; evapotranspiration from the underground reservoir (ET m), on an annual basis; and a lag phase of maximum I and maximum Q g (t g) within a hydrological year. The water balance equations are written for catchment areas shaped on crystalline rocks and located in temperate climates. The regression lines are f… Show more

“…Then, how is it justified when in some areas there is a high-radon production in the rocks and a reduced radon concentration underground? In order to answer this question, it is important to study the connection between several factors that can increase the radon diffusion from rocks to surface water, namely the weathering of U-bearing minerals under certain specific pH conditions [27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35], the weathering rate, rock hydraulic diffusivity [36][37][38][39][40], and the emanation coefficient [41]. The main purpose of this study is to present a new standpoint on the radiological assessment of drinking water based on the relationship between groundwater contamination risk and radon production in rocks.…”

“…The Corgo River is a tributary of the Douro River and runs mostly along the main regional geotectonic structure so-called the Penacova-Régua-Verín fault (PRVF) with a NNE-SSW direction, producing tectonic hillslopes ranging from 300 to 1400 m ( Figure 1c). This study area is characterized by a cold-wet period from October to May, succeeded by a warm-dry period from July to August [35]. This study area also has from 1960 to 1991 an annual precipitation rate between 721 to 2709 mm ( Figure 1d).…”
