Inflammation is associated with a worsening of presbycusis: Evidence from the MRC national study of hearing

Abstract: The current findings support an association between inflammaging (a condition potentially amenable to pharmacological treatment or lifestyle management) and presbycusis.

“…Vershcuur and colleagues concluded that inflammation is a component of the mechanisms underlying presbycusis . In order to eliminate potential sample bias, this same group conducted a similar investigation on a different population data set and concluded many of the same basic findings (Verschuur et al, 2014). …”

“…The pathway of chronic inflammation is not fully understood, however several possible mechanisms have been proposed (Franceschi, Campisi, 2014). Due to the buildup of pro-inflammatory proteins, inflammaging is likely to be a result of an acquired high “inflammatory state” (Verschuur et al, 2014). Since the overall goal of an inflammatory reaction is to clear the body of a particular cause of cell injury, optimal rates are beneficial.…”

“…However, average swimming time was shorter for the mice administered 150 mg/kg KRG than for the other groups (*p b 0.05). associated chronic increase in inflammatory status and presbycusis may provide new avenues to reduce the progression of this condition (Verschuur et al, 2014). Studies have shown that autophagy is a critical regulator of organellar homeostasis, particularly in mitochondria (Koga and Cuervo, 2011).…”

“…Combination antioxidant therapy has been reported to prevent AHL in C57BL/6 mice (Heman-Ackah et al, 2010). However, a report about antioxidant-enriched diet does not delay age-related auditory pathology in female CBA/J mice (Sha et al, 2012) raises the issue that the complex biological mechanism underlying AHL is still poorly understood (Verschuur et al, 2014). Identification of a link between the age- In the tail-hanging test, the balance responses were scored as described in Materials and methods section.…”
