Inflammatory markers in patients with internal carotid artery stenosis

Abstract: IntroductionAvailable reports underline the significance of the inflammatory process in the development, progression and destabilisation of atherosclerotic plaques in the internal carotid artery (ICA). The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the degree of ICA stenosis, ultrasound plaque morphology and serum concentration of selected inflammatory markers.Material and methodsSixty-five patients with ICA stenosis > 50% (39 symptomatic) and 30 healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study. “…We are not able to determine which antigens were responsible for the increased IC level. Nonetheless, our study adds negative data to the pool of mixed-positive evidence for C. pneumoniae and mixed evidence for H. pylori, CMV, or HSV (31-33). Of course, our results do not exclude the potential role of these biomarkers in the acute phase of IS or MI (13).…”

“…Several pro-inflammatory cytokines, especially TNF-a, have been reported to promote atherosclerosis, and the concentration of TNF-a was found to be elevated in the serum of patients in the general population with atherosclerosis [5]. Trujillo et al [3] reported increased TNF-a production in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells of CVID patients after stimulation with lipopolysaccharide compared to healthy subjects, consistent with CVID being a pro-inflammatory condition.…”
