Influence of a Probiotic Containing Lactobacillus fermentum on the Laying Performance and Egg Quality of Japanese Quails

Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate the potential of Lactobacillus fermentum, isolated from the intestine of Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica), as a probiotic product. The influence of this probiotics preparation on the laying performance and egg quality of quails was evaluated in a 28-day experiment. A fully randomized design was used with four experimental treatments, namely standard feed, standard feed with antibiotic, standard feed with 5.27 x 10 cells/ml L. fermentum and standard feed with 2.… Show more

“…The positive impact of probiotics on the performance of the laying quail was previously reported by several studies (Hosseini, 2011;Guclu, 2011;Manafi et al, 2016;Siadati et al, 2018). Kalsum et al (2012) reported that administration of L. fermentum did not influence egg quality parameters and egg weight, but significantly improved total egg production and lowered cholesterol content in egg yolk. Probiotic supplementation of Lactobacillus strain reduced serum total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) and triglyceride significantly (Lokapirnasari et al, 2018).…”

“…These results also consistent with past study [ 30 ] that L. fermentum affects egg production. Lactobacillus can be used as probiotics in livestock that works to increase the productivity of livestock [ 31 ].…”

“…A similar result was observed by Kulsum et al . [ 31 ] that L. fermentum does not give effect to the egg mass. Another study [ 32 ] showed that probiotic did not affect egg mass in Japanese quails.…”

“…Not very many studies have evaluated quality measures, but Kalsum et al . () showed that L. salivarius supplementation (10 8 CFU per ml) did not influence quail egg quality parameters and egg weight, but significantly improved total egg production and lowered cholesterol content in egg yolk, making a suitable feed additive for Japanese quail diets (Kalsum et al . ).…”
