Influence of different handling methods and crating periods on plasma corticosterone concentrations in broilers

Abstract: 1. Experiments were conducted to determine whether different handling methods and crating periods differentially affect plasma corticosterone (CS) concentrations in 6 to 7-week-old broilers. 2. Broilers were subjected to 1 of 3 handling methods for 2 min: (i) 3 birds held in an inverted position in one hand (multiple inverted, MI), (ii) 1 bird held in an inverted position (single inverted, SI), or (iii) upright handling (U), which consisted of holding a bird gently with both hands in an upright position. 3. In… Show more

“…Two hours of food deprivation is accompanied by an increase of corticosterone, which may result from metabolic stress and also have a psychological component (Kannan and Mench, 1996;Nijdam et al, 2005). After 24 h, the birds may lose up to 10% of their initial weight (Warriss et al, 1999).…”

“…The birds are carried upside down by their legs and introduced in transport cages, which may cause bruising and dislocated and broken bones (Gregory and Wilkins, 1989;Kettlewell and Mitchell, 1994). In broilers, carrying the birds upside down caused an increase in plasma corticosterone (Kannan and Mench, 1996). During subsequent crating, corticosterone levels remained high, unless the crated birds were kept in a dark, quiet place (Kannan and Mench, 1996;Kannan et al, 1997b).…”

“…adrenal hormones and lead to an elevated plasma corticosterone concentration in broilers (Kannan and Mench 1996;Kannan et al 1997). Nijdam et al (2005) who compared manual catching with a mechanical catching method in broilers before their transport to the slaughterhouse reported that corticosterone levels indicate the same amount of stress for both methods.…”

“…Romero and Romero (2002) found that onset of the stress response in birds is influenced by trapping technique. Kannan and Mench (1996) noted that how a bird is handled prior to blood sampling affects corticosterone levels. Since the point of using a standardized capture and handling protocol is that it allows comparisons to be made among investigations, it is important to know which aspects of the protocol can or cannot be modified without affecting the results.…”
