Influence of different processing times on the quality of Polygoni Multiflora Radix by metabolomics based on ultra high performance liquid chromatography with quadrupole time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry

Abstract: A metabolomics method based on ultra high performance liquid chromatography with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry was developed to evaluate the influence of processing times on the quality of raw and processed Polygoni Multiflora Radix. Principal component analysis and partial least-squares discriminant analysis was used to screen the potential maker metabolites that were contributed to the quality changes. Then these marker metabolites were selected as variables in Fisher's discriminant analysis to… Show more

“…At present, ultra high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS), high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) and gas chromatography-mass (GC-MS) have been widely used in the analysis of metabolomics researches (Zhao et al, 2012a , b ). Among the above analytical techniques, UHPLC-Q-TOF/MS could provide information more rapidly and efficiently, and allow the wide application for quantitative and qualitative analysis with high selectivity and sensitivity (Yu et al, 2017b ; Mocan et al, 2018 ). Thus, the use of UHPLC-Q-TOF/MS is a powerful method which promotes the development of the field of natural products research, especially for TCMs.…”

“…Although the chemical profiling of raw and processed PT was recently studied by GC–MS and LC–atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI)‐MS, the results mainly focused on lipophilic triacylglycerols (Lee et al, ). Metabolomics is a powerful method for processing studies of sophisticated traditional Chinese medicines such as Polygoni Multiflora Radix (Yu et al, ), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Shan et al, ), Aconiti Radix (Li, Wang, Su, Li, & Zhang, ) and Ginseng Radix (Zhang et al, ). Although there have been some reports on metabonomic studies of biochemical changes in rat urine (Zhang, Zhao, Cheng, Lin, et al, ), serum (Su et al, , Zhang, Zhao, Cheng, Dai, et al, ), and placenta and amniotic fluid (Xie et al, ), there has been no holistic research on the global metabolomic characteristic differences between raw and processed PT.…”

“…P . multiflorum (common names: Polygonum multiflorum Thunb 1 , Polygoni Multiflora Radix 2 , Fallopia multiflora , Heshouwu 3 , fleeceflower root 4 , 5 , Polygoni multiflori 6 , and foti root 7 ) is among the most frequently used medicinal plants in China. The main components of this plant are flavonoids 1 , 8 – 11 , quinones, and anthrones 12 , which are used as ingredients in various medicines.…”
