Influence of Herd Relocation upon Production and Endocrine Traits of Dairy Cows

Abstract: Effects of potential stress encountered by two Holstein herds relocated into a new double-six herringbone parlor and free-stall facility were studied by evaluating alterations of milk yield and fat percentage, mastitis status, corticosteroids, and heat detection. One-half of one herd (18 cows) was moved 100 m to new facilities (Merged), and the remaining 18 cows were maintained in their original tie-stall barn (Control). The same day, the second herd of 50 cows (Moved) was transported via stock trailer 7 km to… Show more

“…Any reduction in milk yield following lying deprivation is small and short-lived (Munksgaard and Løvendahl, 1993;Verkerk et al, 1999;Cooper et al, 2007). In experiment 2, the major reduction in milk yield suggests that the foot trimming caused stress, but of lesser magnitude than relocation stress, which was observed to cause a 10 kg/day yield reduction for 3 days (Varner et al, 1983). More minor stressors cause less effect -tuberculin testing has been observed to reduce milk yield by 1 kg/day (King, 1976) and visitor disturbances resulted in reduced yield by 0.5 kg/day (King, 1978), both of these for about 2 days.…”

“…In the study of Varner et al (1983), Holstein cows were moved 100 m from a tie-stall barn into a free-stall facility with a double-six herringbone parlour. Milk yield decreased at first milking, but subsequent milk yields were similar to pre-relocation yields.…”
