Influence of Laser Surface Texturing Sequence on Fatigue Properties of Coated Cold Work Tool Steel

Abstract: The aim of this research was to investigate the influence of laser surface texturing sequence on the fatigue properties of cold-work tool steel. For this reason, polished hourglass-type test specimens made from cold-work tool steel (K890) were surface textured using laser texturing. Surface textures were introduced before and after hard coating deposition (TiAlN) with the aim to investigate the sequence of surface-texturing process. It was found that coating deposition prolongs the fatigue life. The fatigue li… Show more

“…Patterns resembling longitudinal lines in the direction of sheet travel show better performance in reducing the COF compared to patterns composed of transverse and cross cavities, owing to their tendency for mechanical interaction with surface asperities of the workpiece. Sedlaček et al [209] performed the laser texturing of the surface of K890 cold work steel tools before and after TiAIN coating deposition to investigate the effect of the surface-texturing process sequence on its fatigue life. It has been found that when laser texturing is performed after applying the coating, the fatigue strength properties of the tool surface are impaired.…”

“…Similarly, they can act as lubricant reservoirs, improving the load-carrying capacity of the lubricant film due to a cavitation lift force [9][10][11][12][13][14]. However, texturing decreases the fatigue life of the textured components [15].…”
