Influence of Light on Typographic and Colorimetric Properties of Ink Jet Prints

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of light on the changes in typographic and colorimetric properties of ink jet prints in order to establish an appropriate typeface style and type size for business correspondence to ensure information permanence. The prints were made with six ink jet printers from different manufacturers on four different office papers. Four different, widely used typefaces (one old-style, one transitional, and two sans-serif) in five different sizes (6, 8, 10, 12, and 16 p… Show more

“…In consequence, the research on serif and sans-serif typefaces is important (Lund, 1999;Bernard et al, 2003;Arditi and Cho, 2005) as is the research on the legibility of different groups of typefaces (Sheedy et al, 2005;Moret-Tatay and Perea, 2011). The main characteristics of legible typefaces are increased x-height and stressed counter shape (Weisenmiller, 1999;Wheildon, 2005;Mo zina et al, 2010). Furthermore, important factors include the form of letters, the thickness of strokes and white spaces (Tinker, 1966;Reynolds, 1988;Lund, 1999;Shaikh et al, 2006).…”

“…Such a possibility exists only with satellite electrophotographic machines in which one printing unit is used for printing several inks [10,11,12,13]. In this case the printing is done on the already printed (dried) ink layer.…”

“…There are some typeface characteristics to be taken into consideration to make a text more legible. For a small type size, it is known that the differences in stroke width and typographic tonal density (or typographic tonality) are significant [12,13], influencing text legibility. The aim of our research was to establish how big these influences really are, even though a number of other typographic characteristics needs to be observed in order to make a text more legible, i.e., distinctive character features (counter shape), x-height, ascender, descender, serifs, contrast (stroke weight), set width, type size, leading (i.e., space between lines) etc.…”

“…The inkjet technology as one of non-impact printing (NIP) technologies has recently become important and widely used in many different areas, especially for professional use [12,23]. It is also convenient to use the inkjet technology for special effects, e.g., more layers of ink or varnish [24÷27].…”
