Influence of lung function and sleep‐disordered breathing on stroke: a community‐based study

Abstract: Lung function may serve as a risk factor for incident stroke in a community-based population, especially in those with SDB. Spirometry may help improve the risk management for primary care in community-based populations.

“…History of diabetes mellitus was ascertained based on the report of a physician-administered diagnosis or on the reported use of insulin or oral hypoglycemic medication. “…It has been shown in several studies that a reduction in lung function, particularly in COPD patients, significantly increases the likelihood of the development of both non-fatal ischaemic heart disease and CVD such as heart failure and hypertension [107–109]. Further studies have also shown a relationship between this reduced lung function and both fatal and non-fatal stroke [54,110]. These findings suggest that the increased incidence of stroke outcomes are due to patients having increased blood viscosity and infection susceptibility particularly during an exacerbation [111].…”

“…Neck circumference (NC), which is correlated with the distribution of upper body subcutaneous adipose tissue, is also an anthropometric marker used to identify overweight and obese individuals. 8 A previous study demonstrated that NC positively correlated with BMI and WC. 9 In addition, NC was found to be more similar to visceral fat, which is more closely related to cardiovascular risk than subcutaneous fat.…”
