Influence of nano-reinforcement on the mechanical behavior of adhesively bonded single-lap joints subjected to static, quasi-static, and impact loading

Abstract: In this study, the effects of nano-reinforcement on the mechanical response of adhesively bonded single-lap joints with composite adherends subjected to different loading (strain) rates are systematically investigated. The results are then compared to those of the neat thermoset resin and a toughened acrylic-epoxy adhesive. More specifically, nano-reinforced and neat resin-bonded joints mating carbon/epoxy and glass/epoxy adherends were subjected to tensile loadings under 1.5 and 3 mm/min and tensile impacts a… Show more

“…So far, many studies have concentrated on metal layer surface treatment technologies such as acid etching [ 7 , 8 ], sandblasting [ 9 , 10 ], and anodization [ 11 , 12 ]. Additionally, there are numerous reports on resin modification by adding nano-reinforcements to improve the composite performance [ 13 , 14 ].…”

“…Soltannia et al [12] investigated the reinforcing effect of adding carbon nanotubes (CNT), graphene platelets (GnPs) and carbon nanofibers (CNF) into epoxy adhesive. They observed that epoxy/GnP adhesive joints showed high strength among the three carbon fillers.…”

“…The experimental results revealed that not only did the inclusion of nanoparticles improve the mechanical properties of the adhesive, but it also enhanced the resin's viscosity. The improved viscosity renders the adhesive suitable for use in adhesively bonded joints that oriented vertically, which are often encountered in several industrial applications, especially in marine and other applications where relatively thick bond-lines are commonly used [31,32]. Figure 3 shows that the inclusion of the nanoparticles produced the same effect as did the increase in the strain rate.…”

“…Subsequently, a parametric study is conducted to ascertain the influences of various parameters (i.e., the particle type, their weight percentage) on the mechanical properties of the nanocomposite. Finally, the numerical results are compared to the experimental data obtained for the neat and the nanoreinforced epoxy resins [31,32].…”
