Translucency and color stability of resin composite and dental adhesives as modeling liquids – A one-year evaluation

The aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of modeling liquids on the translucency and color shade of resin composites (RCs) after one year of storage. RC specimens were prepared using either a conventional insertion technique (control; without modeling liquid) or a restorative dental modeling insertion technique (RDMIT) with dental adhesives as modeling liquids (Scotchbond ™ Multi-Purpose [SBMP; 3M ESPE] or Adper™ Single Bond 2 [SB; 3M ESPE]). The initial colors of the specimens were obtained with a digital spectrophotometer and the CIEL * a * b * color system, after which specimens were stored (37°C) in distilled water or red wine for 12 months. Color measurements were reassessed after 6 and 12 months of storage, and scanning electron microscopy was performed after 12 months. Translucency and color change (ΔE * ) were calculated and analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 5%). RC samples prepared via RDMIT showed a translucency similar to that of control samples. ΔE * was also less intense for RCs containing SBMP than for RCs containing SB. Specimens stored in wine showed a clear pattern of degradation, especially in the control group, and surface degradation seemed to be less intense for specimens prepared with SBMP and SB than for specimens without. Specimens stored in water did not show clear evidence of surface degradation. RDMIT appears to be an interesting approach to reduce ΔE * in RCs over time without negative effects on the translucency of the material. However, the modeling liquid should feature a hydrophobic composition, similar to that used in the SBMP group, the achieve the best results.

ResumoO surgimento das resinas compostas, da técnica de condicionamento ácido e dos variados tipos de adesivos provocaram uma revolução na Odontologia, que aperfeiçoou a devolução da função e estética ao dente. Um dos grandes desafios atuais em dentística restauradora é a manutenção da estética das restaurações de resina composta. O objetivo deste estudo foi revisar a literatura sobre a alteração de cor nas resinas compostas, evidenciando o estado atual das pesquisas sobre o tema. Foi realizada uma síntese de estudos in vitro realizado no período de janeiro de 2011 a janeiro de 2016 indexados na base de dados Pubmed. Seguindo os critérios de inclusão, entraram nesta revisão 13 estudos que avaliaram o grau de descoloração de resinas compostas frente à exposição a diferentes líquidos de coloração. Concluiu-se que apesar do rápido desenvolvimento da biotecnologia e nanotecnologia na Odontologia, novas pesquisas precisam ser feitas a fim de encontrar um material restaurador com propriedades mecânicas e estéticas de excelência, superando as limitações dos atuais. One of the main challenges in restorative dentistry is to maintain the aesthetics of composite restorations. The aim of this study was to review the literature on color changes in the composites, showing the current state of research on the subject. In vitro synthesis studies conducted from January 2011 to January 2016 indexed in Pubmed database was performed. Following the inclusion criteria entered in this review 13 studies that assessed the degree of discoloration composite front resins to exposure to different staining liquids. It was concluded that despite the rapid development of biotechnology and nanotechnology in dentistry, further research needs to be done in order to find a restorative material with mechanical and aesthetic properties of excellence, overcoming the limitations of current. Aim: To evaluate the roughness (Ra), Knoop hardness (KHN) and change of color (∆E) of esthetic restorative materials (Filtek Z350-composite nanoparticle; Empress Direct-composite nanohybrid and IPS e.Max-ceramic) subjected to contact with the Streptococcus mutans biofilm (biological degradation) associated with abrasion generated by tooth brushing (mechanical degradation). Methods: Ten specimens of each material were prepared, and the surface properties initial were evaluated. All specimens were exposed to Streptococcus mutans inoculum; after 7 days, surface properties were evaluated. The specimens were submitted to a 30,000 toothbrushing cycles, using a toothpaste slurry, then, surface properties were evaluated again. Data were analyzed by Proc-Mixed, One-way ANOVA, Tukey-Kramer and Tukey's tests (α = 0.05). Results: At the baseline, ceramic showed the highest Ra and KHN values; after the biological degradation the composites showed increased Ra, but KHN did not change; after the mechanical degradation, Empress showed decreased Ra and Z350 showed similar Ra, the KHN increased to both composites, and all materials had increased lightness after the mechanical degradation. Conclusions: The results suggest that, when exposed to Streptococcus mutans biofilm and toothbrush abrasion, the ceramics undergoes minimal degradation and the composites exhibited variable degradation, depending on the composition of the material.
