Influence of physical exercise on microRNAs in skeletal muscle regeneration, aging and diseases

Abstract: Skeletal muscle is a dynamic tissue with remarkable plasticity and its growth and regeneration are highly organized, with the activation of specific transcription factors, proliferative pathways and cytokines. The decline of skeletal muscle tissue with age, is one of the most important causes of functional loss of independence in older adults. Maintaining skeletal muscle function throughout the lifespan is a prerequisite for good health and independent living.Physical activity represents one of the most effect… Show more

“…But then again, reproducibility in exercise biomarker studies appears relatively low throughout literature. Many different microRNAs, as well as many different cytokines have been reported to associate with various forms of exercise over the years ( Ultimo et al, 2018 ). One explanation could be that different forms and intensities of exercise can have profoundly different physiological effects.…”

“…All these pro-inflammatory stimuli and growth factors can lead to the alteration of key cellular processes and signaling transduction pathways like MAPKs and PI3K/Akt pathways, prompting the malignant transformation of cells [23,24]. Beyond these molecular changes that alter cellular homeostasis, dietary and environmental factors are also able to induce epigenetic modifications including changes in microRNA (miRNA) expression or in genetic methylation status [25][26][27][28].…”

“…Overall, effects on genes encoding components of the miRNA processing machinery were minor. Furthermore, we did not find major differences with regard to concentrations of a broad variety of individual miRNAs species that we analyzed based on literature data (Kirby and McCarthy, 2013; Meurer et al., 2016; Russell and Lamon, 2015; Silva et al., 2017; Silva et al., 2020; Sjögren et al., 2018; Ultimo et al., 2018; Widmann et al., 2019; cf. Table 2) (Figure 8 and data not shown).…”
