Influence of Pruning Measures on Recovery of Bois Noir-infected Grapevines

Abstract: In recent years, visual and analytical observations revealed a significant increase of ÔBois noirÕ (BN) in Austrian vineyards. Removing infected parts by pruning can prevent or reduce spread of the pathogen within the vines. Knowledge about the effect of pruning practices on recovery rates is essential for grapevine growers. Vines showing BN for the first time were visually categorized into classes of symptoms according to disease severity. In the ensuing winter, plants were pollarded 15 cm above the graft uni… Show more

“…It is an incurable quarantine disease which can only be contained by the elimination of the infected plant material, reduction of the vector number in vineyards and with the removal of the plants mostly known as phytoplasma carriers (bindweed, nettle etc. ) in the close proximity of vineyards (Maixner et al 1995;Stark-Urnau and Kast 2008;Riedle-Bauer et al 2010). BN is caused by stolbur phytoplasma (16SrXII-A subgroup) and is transmitted by the vector Hyalesthes obsoletus Signoret (Hemiptera, Cixiidae) (Maixner et al 1995;Sforza et al 1998).…”

“…Moreover, the RNA-Seq analysis of samples from these grapevines revealed that there was not even a single differentially expressed gene defined between the recovered and uninfected grapevines ( Table S1 ), which indicated that the recovery appeared to have occurred previously, in 2018 or 2019 [ 20 ]. Of note, these samples were collected in a production vineyard where the vines are pruned extensively each year, which is a practice that can have positive effects on grapevine recovery from bois noir disease [ 42 ].…”

“…However, two other species belonging to the family Cixiidae -Reptalus panzeri (Löw) and cixius wagneri China -were found in this survey. In recent years these species have attracted increasing scientific interest in many European wine-growing areas because of their potential as phytoplasma transmitters (Palermo et al 2004;Riedle-Bauer et al 2006;Chireceanu et al 2011). (Weintraub & Beanland 2006;Chireceanu et al 2011).…”
