Influence of reduction processes on the colour and photochromism of amorphous mesoporous TiO2 thin films loaded with a silver salt

Abstract: Silver nanoparticles were created inside mesoporous titania thin films by different reduction processes. We investigated the influence of the reduction method on the colour and photochromism of these amorphous TiO(2) films. The results highlight brown films by optical reduction, gray films by thermal reduction, and red, purple or orange films by chemical reduction. The different size distributions and localizations of the nanoparticles, characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy and electron microscopy, give var… Show more

“…Other authors prepare mesoporous TiO 2 fi lms by sol-gel technique coupled with evaporation induced self-assembly method. [15][16][17] Recently, some authors elaborated Ag/TiO 2 thin fi lms on polyethylene terephalate (PET) sheets by sol-gel processes without damaging the substrate. [ 18,19 ] Some others authors prepared Ag/ TiO 2 nanocomposites by magnetron sputter deposition without addressing their photochromic properties.…”

“…In many of them, Ag nanoparticles are formed from a silver salt reduced by (electro) chemical, [ 15,16 ] thermal, [ 16 ] or photocatalytic [ 4,6,8,10,14,17 ] route, either on a dense TiO 2 surface, [ 5,8,14 ] or in a nanoporous [ 4,6,9,10 ] or mesoporous [15][16][17] TiO 2 matrix. Some groups synthesize these fi lms from commercial sols with anatase TiO 2 nanoparticles [ 4,7,9,10 ] by spin coating and postheat treatment at 500 °C.…”
