Influence of surface roughness on the polarimetric characteristics of a wire-grid grating polarizer

Abstract: The influence of surface roughness on the polarimetric performance of a wire-grid polarizer (WGP) is numerically investigated using rigorous coupled-wave analysis over 100 random surface realizations. Surface roughness is modeled with a Gaussian surface, represented by two independent parameters: surface height deviation and correlation length of a profile. The results show that WGP performance can suffer from significant degradation as well as increased deviation with surface roughness, although the extent va… Show more

“…The remaining difference between experiment and theory is most likely due to the spatial resolution of the simulation and the measurement uncertainty of α on the SEM image, as well as the aforementionned effect of the adhesion layer. According to recent studies [22], surface roughness should not degrade the performance significantly. In addition, the trapezoidal shape smoothens the field distribution compared to rectangular shapes, further reducing the influence of surface irregularities.…”

“…Therefore, Au deposited on the etched SiO 2 post has poor surface smoothness at the top and forms a sidewall, which scatters the light and reduces its transmittance, deteriorating the performance of the polarizer. [22][23][24][25] Therefore, we attempted to improve the surface smoothness using the secondary etching technique. To reduce the surface roughness and sidewall, Ar ion milling was performed to etch the irregular shape of the metal.…”

“…Polarimetry using a biomolecular WGP consisting of hybridizing DNA-nanoparticle composites was reported 24 . In addition, effects of surface roughness were analyzed on WGP performance 25 . A WGP was explored on a rotating platform 26 and flexible surface 27 30 , while a plasmonic WGP was investigated based on blazed grating structure 31 .…”
