Influence of Task and Tool Characteristics on Scissor Skills in Typical Adults

Abstract: To clarify expectations for mature cutting skills and investigate the influences of cutting task and scissor type, we videotaped 60 typical adults cutting three shapes with two different types of scissors. The videotapes were reviewed, and 38 aspects of grasp and cutting motions were rated. Percentages of participants who used a particular grip or cutting motion for each shape with each scissor type were reported and compared. Findings included variations in grasp that depended on the scissor type used and var… Show more

“…Scissoring involves the overall movement of the arm, including not only the fingers but also the wrist, elbow, and shoulder. However, in hairdressing, most of the motion involves cutting along a straight line, which can be performed without substantial motion of wrist, elbow, and shoulder [2]. Thus, we limit our focus to hand motions.…”

“…Therefore, it is recommended to maintain the wrist joint in the neutral position to reduce pressure in the carpal tunnel when CTS occurs. The wrist joint and forearm maintain an almost neutral position during the opening and closing movements when cutting paper [9], but hairdressers use their forearm in the pronated position and wrist joint in the flexed and dorsiflexed position. Therefore, the pressure in the carpal tunnel is high, and the incidence of muscle malaise and pain is high [4].…”

“…Therefore, the pressure in the carpal tunnel is high, and the incidence of muscle malaise and pain is high [4]. Small scissors are mainly held in the dominant hand, and cut an object by the opening and closing movements of the thumb and index, middle, and ring fingers [9,10]. A hairdresser bends the thumb to close the scissors and uses the weight of the handle to open the blades; this movement is mainly performed by the thenar eminence and flexor pollicis longus.…”

“…Scissors, like all other tools, are extensions of the human body and help increase the speed, power and accuracy of the work [5,6]. Daily used hand tools may have a strong impact on health, on work performance and on local muscular areas, such as those involved in finger-bending movements [7][8][9][10][11][12][13].…”
