Influence of the Host Phase on the Vibrational Spectra of Europium‐Doped Zirconia Prepared by Hydrothermal Processing

Abstract: Nanocrystalline zirconia (ZrO2) powders doped with 0.5 up to 5 mol% europium (Eu3+) were prepared by hydrothermal process using ZrCl4 and EuCl3·6H2O as starting materials. Optical emission and vibrational properties of as‐prepared and calcined samples were investigated by phonon sideband (PSB), Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) and photoluminescence spectroscopy as well as lifetime measurements. We found that the doping degree had a strong effect on the crystalline phase, m‐ and t‐ZrO2, of the host material, … Show more

“…The trivalent europium ion Eu 3+ is an excellent model ion to probe the chemical environment around the Ln 3+ center by exploiting, for instance, the relative intensity and symmetry‐dependent Stark splitting of its hypersensitive 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 f–f transition . This allows for the correlation between the observed spectral features and the polymorph‐dependent variation in molecular arrangement.…”

“…7 F 2 f-f transition. [41][42][43][44][45] This allows for the correlation between the observed spectralf eatures and the polymorph-dependentv ariation in molecular arrangement. Moreover, using the hyperspectral single-crystal imaging technique, analysisofcrystal face-dependent PL becomes possible, probing opticala nisotropy at a single-crystal level.…”
