Influence of the surface modification of BaTiO3 nanoparticles by hydrolyzed chitosan obtained from shrimp exoskeletons on the optical response intensity of the second harmonic

Abstract: Ferroelectric nanoparticles, due to their high non-linear optical response, are of considerable practical interest for their use as nanoprobes for the study of biological materials by multiphoton microscopy methods. To prevent toxic effects, it is necessary to modify the surface using biocompatible polymers. Here we report the results of the study on the effect of surface modification of BaTiO3 nanoparticles with hydrolyzed chitosan obtained from shrimp exoskeletons (Penaeus vannamei). It was found that increa… Show more

“…Functionalization and surface modification have been a straightforward approach used by researchers worldwide, in order to provide specificity and selectivity across biological systems. [ 136 ] Further, response against external stimulus have also been an attractive alternative, that could be incorporated in order to further improve the biological responses of BaTiO 3 NPs. The biological response of any material depends on both intrinsic as well as extrinsic factors.…”

“…The existence of the hydroxyl group is revealed by the peak at 1647 cm −1 associated with the content of molecular water of (O–H) band vibration, in contrast to the weak hydroxylate (O–H) band that is also existing in 3378 cm −1 for BaTiO 3 [ 44 , 45 ]. BaTiO 3 –OH is responsible for the peak that is observed at 1430 cm −1 for BaTiO 3 [ 46 ].…”

“…Further BT nanoparticles could offer piezoelectric behavior and are also used for their nonlinear optical properties and have well-established use in second harmonic generating (SHG) biomicroscopy. 25,26 As discussed further, the association of AuNCs with BaTiO 3 nanoparticles results in fluorescent emission in the near infra-red (NIR) region which shows the utility of the synthesized nanocomposites as a fluorescent probe for biomedical applications. Furthermore, to understand the influence of an EMF, the fabricated nanocomposites were evaluated for their physicochemical, electrochemical, and biological activity and compared with the fabrication process of ABT without the presence of EMF.…”
