ObjectiveTo evaluate and compare stressors identified by patients of a coronary intensive care unit with those perceived by patients of a general postoperative intensive care unit.MethodsThis cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted in the coronary intensive care and general postoperative intensive care units of a private hospital. In total, 60 patients participated in the study, 30 in each intensive care unit. The stressor scale was used in the intensive care units to identify the stressors. The mean score of each item of the scale was calculated followed by the total stress score. The differences between groups were considered significant when p < 0.05.ResultsThe mean ages of patients were 55.63 ± 13.58 years in the coronary intensive care unit and 53.60 ± 17.47 years in the general postoperative intensive care unit. For patients in the coronary intensive care unit, the main stressors were “being in pain”, “being unable to fulfill family roles” and “being bored”. For patients in the general postoperative intensive care unit, the main stressors were “being in pain”, “being unable to fulfill family roles” and “not being able to communicate”. The mean total stress scores were 104.20 ± 30.95 in the coronary intensive care unit and 116.66 ± 23.72 (p = 0.085) in the general postoperative intensive care unit. When each stressor was compared separately, significant differences were noted only between three items. “Having nurses constantly doing things around your bed” was more stressful to the patients in the general postoperative intensive care unit than to those in the coronary intensive care unit (p = 0.013). Conversely, “hearing unfamiliar sounds and noises” and “hearing people talk about you” were the most stressful items for the patients in the coronary intensive care unit (p = 0.046 and 0.005, respectively).ConclusionThe perception of major stressors and the total stress score were similar between patients in the coronary intensive care and general postoperative intensive care units.

INFORMAÇÕES GERAISRecebido em: agosto de 2017 Aceito em: novembro de 2017Palavras-Chave: Hospitalização Percepção Unidade de terapia intensiva RESUMO Introdução: A Unidade de Terapia Intensiva (UTI) atende doentes graves e recuperá-veis, através de recursos tecnológicos e de uma assistência integral e contínua. Além disso, fazem-se necessários profissionais capacitados e atuantes, atentos à singularidade e multidimensionalidade dos pacientes. Objetivos: Descrever as percepções dos pacientes sobre a internação na UTI. Métodos: Estudo qualitativo, descritivo e exploratório. A amostra foi constituída por onze pacientes provenientes da UTI de um hospital escola do sul de Minas Gerais. Resultados: Os dados encontrados foram agrupados nas seguintes categorias: percepção anterior e atual sobre a UTI; atendimento da equipe multiprofissional; rotinas; e condição clínica e procedimentos. Conclusão: Antes da internação, os pacientes, possuíam uma visão estereotipada da UTI, transformando sua percepção após a internação, passando a ver a UTI como local de tratamento intensivo. A equipe multiprofissional é importante no alívio da ansiedade, do medo e da solidão. O respeito à subjetividade e particularidade de pacientes e familiares favorece a adaptação ao setor. Assim, a política de humanização vem a cada dia ocupando mais espaço nas UTIs. Keywords:Hospitalization Perception Intensive care unit ABSTRACT Introduction: The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) treats serious and recoverable patients, through technological resources and counting on a whole and continuous assistance. In addition, we need trained and active professionals, who can be attentive to the uniqueness and multidimensionality of the patients. Aims: To describe the perceptions of the patients on hospitalization at the ICU. Methods: Qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study. The sample consisted of eleven patients from the ICU of a teaching hospital in southern Minas Gerais. Results: The collected data were grouped in the following categories: previous and current perceptions of ICU, attendance of the multidisciplinary team, routines and, clinical condition and procedures. Conclusion: Before hospitalization, the patients had a stereotypical view of the ICU. This perception was different after hospitalization, as they began to see the ICU as an intensive treatment site. The multidisciplinary team is important in relieving anxiety, fear and loneliness. The respect for the subjectivity and particularity of the patients and their families favors adaptation to the sector. Therefore, a humanization policy is, each day, taking up its space in the ICU.
