Influencing Factors on the Usefulness of an Earthquake Early Warning System during the 2017 Mexico City Earthquakes

Abstract: The paper presents the results of an ongoing research project on the performance of the SASMEX system following the two earthquakes that hit Mexico City in 2017, (a) the 7 September, and (b) the 19 September. In an earlier work, some preliminary findings on the perceived usefulness of the system have been reported. The aim of the present study is the identification of the precursors leading to the outcome variable (‘Usefulness of the SASMEX system’). An ordinal logistic regression analysis has been conducted. … Show more

“…Along with the massive destruction of cities and buildings owing to destructive earthquakes, many methods related to earthquake damage evaluation (Sheibani & Ou, 2020; Shwe & Adeli, 1993; Y. Xu et al., 2021) and new earthquake engineering techniques (Rafiei & Adeli, 2017; Santos‐Reyes, 2021; Zhou & Adeli, 2003) have been proposed, leading to a deeper understanding of the seismic damage mechanism. On this basis, the sustainability (Guerrero‐Miranda & Luque González, 2021; Rafiei & Adeli, 2016; N. Wang & Adeli, 2014; Zavadskas et al., 2018) and seismic resilience (Bruneau & Reinhorn, 2007; Bruneau et al., 2003; Cimellaro et al., 2010; Franchin & Cavalieri, 2015; Z. Wang et al., 2017; Zhang et al., 2022) of cities and buildings have received wide attention.…”

“…Previous research on the development of earthquake response and warning system using the SES60 earthquake sensor is still has some shortcomings including the alarms as a voice warning equipment, and data can only be known when logging into the web and can only be accessed by one computer at the same time. Developing this system to provide information more quickly and accurately, to ease the broad coverage accessed through the internet network is needed [12].…”

“…Each of them is designed based on the topography of the location. The first one is in Mexico, which borders the pacific ocean directly, some earthquakes detecting sensors in offshore subduction zones that can trigger alarms in Mexico City [12]. The second one is in Romania, the system is designed to provide earthquake early warning in the Carpathian Mountains to the city of Bucharest, 100 miles from the source of the earthquake [13]- [17].…”
