Information Freshness and Packet Drop Rate Interplay in a Two-User Multi-Access Channel

Abstract: In this work, we combine the two notions of timely delivery of information to study their interplay; namely, deadlineconstrained packet delivery due to latency constraints and freshness of information. More specifically, we consider a twouser multiple access setup with random access, in which user 1 is a wireless device with a buffer and has external bursty traffic which is deadline-constrained, while user 2 monitors a sensor and transmits status updates to the destination. We provide analytical expressions fo… Show more

“…The studies mainly focus on the derivation of closed-form or approximated expressions of the average and peak AoI in different network set-ups and under different queueing disciplines. Also, AoI performance analysis has been studied in random-access networks, [9], [10], as well as in a CSMA environment [11]. In [9], [10], the authors study the interplay between AoI-oriented users and delay-constrained users in random-access networks.…”

“…., where ∆ (τ ) = lim t→τ − ∆(t). This is useful when measuring the worst-case performance of a system, and particularly, due to its analytical tractability, when considering not just the mean, but higher moments of the age distribution [67], metrics related to its tail [68], or even the complete Probability Density Function (PDF) [69]- [72].…”

“…Furthermore, there is a line of works that studies the interplay between AoI-oriented users and delay-constrained users [61][62][63]. In [61], the authors consider the interplay between packet drop rate and average AoI in a multi-access channel.…”
