A hot gas is used for heating the cavity surface of a mold. Different mold gap sizes were designed. The mold surface temperature was heated to above the glass transition temperature of the plastic material, and the mold then closed for melt filling. The cavity surface can be heated to 130 ∘ C to assist the melt filling of the microfeatures. Results show that hot gas heating can improve the filling process and achieve 91% of the high aspect ratio microgrooves (about 640.38 m of the maximum of 700 m). The mold gap size strongly affects the heating speed and heating uniformity. Without surface preheating, the center rib is the highest. When the heating target temperature is 90 ∘ C or 100 ∘ C, the three microribs have a good uniformity of height. However, when the target temperature exceeds 100 ∘ C, the left side rib is higher than the other ribs.

Design of experiment is the method, which is used at a very large scale to study the experimentations of industrial processes. It is a statically approach where we develop the mathematical models through experimental trial runs to predict the possible output on the basis of the given input data or parameters. The aim of this chapter is to stimulate the engineering community to apply Taguchi technique to experimentation, the design of experiments, and to tackle quality problems in industrial chemical processes that they deal with. Based on years of research and applications, Dr. G. Taguchi has standardized the methods for each of these DOE application steps. Thus, DOE using Taguchi approach has become a much more attractive tool to practicing engineers and scientists.And since the last four decades, there were limitations when conventional experimental design techniques were applied to industrial experimentation. And Taguchi, also known as orthogonal array design, adds a new dimension to conventional experimental design. Taguchi method is a broadly accepted method of DOE, which has proven in producing high-quality products at subsequently low cost.

Injection compression molding (ICM) with high aspect ratio surface features was performed to clarify the effect of molding conditions on replication characteristics and molecular orientation distribution. Short-shot defects and surface replication were better when using ICM than when using conventional injection molding. A long compression stroke and short delay time condition were optimum conditions to used to achieve uniform surface replication. Molecular orientation was also reduced by the long compression stroke. To reduce molecular orientation, the compression motion should be carried out immediately after injection motion in the case of 0.2 mm thickness. For 0.6 mm thickness, the compression motion was conducted after the shear stress relaxation to reduce the molecular orientation. Short-shot tests revealed distinctive replication behavior in ICM. Results show that replication behavior and local molecular orientation are generated by a slightly frozen layer at the filling area before compression.
