Ink-jet printing an optimal multi-enzyme system

Abstract: A method using ink-jet printing for constructing multi-enzyme systems was proposed, in which a precisely defined enzyme ratio and two-dimensional distribution was obtained by the preset 'color' values. The applications of the print-on-paper multi-enzyme systems were exemplified by the detection of glucose and the design of an enzyme-enabled two-dimensional code.

“…The detection range of the testing strips is from 20 to 120 mM, with a limit of 20 mM by visible detection, making it promising for fast and convenient determination of H 2 O 2 in solution. Detection of H 2 O 2 is important in food, pharmaceutical, textile industries, and environmental protection (Zhang et al 2014b;Jv et al 2010). As an additive for microbial inhibiting or bleaching, H 2 O 2 has been used in food industry (Nascimento et al 2017).…”

“…[121] In this study, two sets of enzyme combinations (GOx/HRP, diaphrose (DP)/alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH)) were printed in different proportions to achieve the most effective bienzymatic reactions. After proving a good agreement between the preset mass ratio (CMYK color value in the graphic software) and the printed mass ratio (judged from the emission of fluorescently labeled enzymes), the enzyme ratios to obtain maximum reaction yields (GOx/ HRP = 2:8, DP/ADH = 5:95) were determined (the case of GOx/HRP is shown in Figure 16).…”

“…For example Zhang et al. used inks with enzymes, surfactants and PEG 20 000 for optimization‐assays of glucose oxidase/horseradish peroxidase (GOx/HRP) and alcohol dehydrogenase/diaphorase (ADH/DP) ratio gradients. In another modification, inkjet etching was used by Abe et al.…”

“…Inks containing enzymes, nanoparticles, chromogenic indicators, antibodies, etc., can be used for the paper modification. For example Zhang et al [64] used inks with enzymes, surfactants and PEG 20 000 for optimization-assays of glucose oxidase/horseradish peroxidase (GOx/HRP) and alcohol dehydrogenase/diaphorase (ADH/DP) ratio gradients. In another modification, inkjet etching was used by Abe et al [65] to expose polystyrene-soaked paper by piezoelectric ejection of toluene and modify the exposed surface for tetrabromophenol-blue-based protein assay.…”
