Innovation Forms and Firm Export Performance: Empirical Evidence from ECA Countries

Abstract: empirical approach we refer to the self-selection hypothesis derived from the Melitz (2003) model which proposed the existence of a positive relationship between firm productivity and the probability of exporting. We argue that innovation activities should be regarded as a key element that can increase the level of firm productivity. We focus our analysis on four forms of innovation activities: product, process, marketing, organizational and managerial innovation. The empirical implementation of our analytical… Show more

“…Rosenbusch et al (2011) show in their study that rise in IP can increase the performance due to the role of innovators on bringing a competitive advantage in the circumstances where information and experience are major limits to the company. This finding is also similar to the results of Azar and Ciabuschi (2017), Oktavio et al (2019) and Cieślik and Michałek (2017) which show that the IP can predict EP positively. The results explain that the marketing-orientated export activities may predict EP positively.…”

“…However, in his model productivity differences among firms are exogenously given and each firm has to pay fixed costs of entry into domestic and foreign markets. Following recent studies by Cieślik and Michałek (2017;2018), in our article we refer to the modified Melitz (2003) model in which both productivity as well as the costs of export market entry can be endogenised as related to various types of innovations.…”

“…The majority of the existing studies rely on R&D expenditures as a measure of innovation (Hirsch & Bijaoui, 1985;Kumar & Siddharthan, 1994;Braunerhjelm, 1996;Basile, 2001;Cieślik, Michałek, & Michałek, 2012;2014a, b, c;. There is a limited number of studies that employ survey data with explicit information on actual innovation outcomes (Wagner, 1996;Wakelin, 1998;Bernard & Jensen, 1999;Roper & Love, 2002;Lachenmaier & Wößmann, 2006;Cassiman, Golovko, & Martínez-Ros, 2010;Van Beveren & Vandenbussche 2010;Becker & Egger 2013, Cieślik et al, 2016, Brodzicki, 2017, Cieślik & Michałek, 20172018).…”
