Innovation Roadmapping: Building Concepts from Practitioners’ Insights

Abstract: Cartographic roadmaps used for navigating from A to B provide a strong metaphor for innovation roadmaps used at firms for navigating from the present to the future. Now ready to move beyond this metaphor—the pace and proliferation of knowledge on innovation roadmapping have reached a point at which it would be useful to lay out some groundwork for extended theorizing and research in this area. This paper contributes here by reporting on a qualitative inductive research based on documented practitioners’ insigh… Show more

“…22 Developing product roadmaps entails a series of processes to define a strategic vision, scan the environment, revise the product mission, estimate product lifecycles, and evaluate development efforts. 23 Roadmaps sometimes leverage visual elements to highlight the interactions among markets, products, and technologies, 24 and to show timing, 25 thus making clear the specific technologies that will be used in each product generation. Such integrated roadmaps ( Figure 3) might also include information pertinent to executing the plan, such as marketing activities or key performance indicators (KPIs) for each stage of development.…”
